Background

The Education & Training Foundation commissioned AELP and its strategic partners to manage its two high profile staff support programmes (ASSP and TSSP) designed to increase the quality and professional capacity of individual staff delivering Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

In the first phase of both programmes provider led projects were commissioned to develop a range of resources focusing on the key strands of the programmes which for TSSP were;
  • Improving the quality of teaching with a focus on English and maths, employability and basic occupational skills
  • Supporting staff to engage with employers with a focus on securing and managing work placements, working with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and developing placements in new sectors
  • Supporting the development of robust initial assessment processes to ensure appropriate learner enrolment
  • Improving the quality of provision for learners from protected, vulnerable and excluded groups and communities and those who have protected characteristics.
While the ASSP projects focused on producing resources to support Apprenticeship staff in:
  • Securing and further developing employer involvement in Apprenticeship delivery – supporting staff to engage successfully with employers to secure Apprenticeships.
  • Further improving curriculum development and teaching, learning and assessment on Apprenticeship programmes- with a particular focus on developing effective strategies based on those proposed by the Commission on Adult Vocational Teaching and Learning (CAVTL), developing the use of technology in Apprenticeships and embedding English and maths in vocational delivery.
The resources are now available on the two dedicated websites http://www.traineeship-staff-support.co.uk/ and http://www.apprenticeship-staff-support.co.uk/

The second phase of the programmes sought to disseminate the resources and to provide further support to the sector through a variety of activities including workshops, webinars, pod casts, a consultancy service and the establishment of communities of practice. Funding was also made available to extend and enhance some of the phase 1 projects, eg resources to support staff working with vulnerable learners.

There will also be an opportunity to learn from project leads and to review the new resources, including an Apprenticeship e-guide that will be launched during the day.
