Workshops
Delegates have the opportunity to attend two workshops as part of the conference.

One during Session A and one during Session B.

Session A - Time: 12.30pm - 1.30pm

Workshop 1: Lessons Learnt from Preparing to Deliver the new Science Apprenticeship Standards

Facilitated by Nick Welch & Marie Gould, Petroc

Workshop 2: Collaborative involvement of employers in the design and delivery of Apprenticeships

Facilitated by Jay Derrick – IoE/UCL

The workshop will provide an opportunity to hear about and discuss the findings of the ETF-funded Teach Too project (see www.teachtoo.org ), which is being led by University College London Institute of Education (UCL IOE) and the Association of Employment and Learning Providers (AELP), working in partnership.  The Teach Too project has been highlighting the benefits to all vocational education and training programmes, including Apprenticeships, of ‘people from industry teaching their work’, in collaborative partnerships with professional trainers/teachers.  Case studies will be showcased, and issues raised by this approach will be discussed.

Workshop 3: ASSP Community of Practice - Supporting Apprenticeship Staff

Facilitated by Gerry Baker & Wendy Wilkinson, Strategic Development Network

This workshop will look at how Communities of Practice were approached and built up as part of the Apprenticeship staff support programme, the methods which proved most popular, as well as some of the difficulties to be overcome. It includes some inputs from the delivery team and group work.

Objectives:

  • to review the purpose and function of a Community of Practice and explain different approaches
  • to provide networking opportunities with links to link-minded people
  • to identify areas of common interest in Apprenticeship support.

 

Workshop 4: Improving Teaching and Learning Through Observation and Mentoring

Facilitated by Alison Sumpter & Sean Errington, SETA.

Background to the work in the project – what it was designed to achieve, methodology, how to access the resources.
In terms of the OTL modules to show how they enhance the existing suite of observation practitioner e-learning modules. It will also look briefly at the content of the 3 modules:

• Inspection Perspectives
• Developing Observation Action Plans
• Producing Observation Reports

In terms of the mentoring element – the resource, overview of content and how to use the workshop to develop mentoring skills in employers and the wider community within Apprenticeships.

Session B - Time: 3.00pm - 4.00pm

Workshop 5: Progression from Traineeships to Apprenticeships

Facilitated by Anna Morrision, KEITS

This workshop will explore case studies of where progression from Traineeships to Apprenticeships has been successful.

We will look at resources from both the Traineeship and Apprenticeship Staff Support Programme and look at the success factors to ensure that progression opportunities happen.

Workshop 6: Marketing to Learners: Creating Rich Insight to Recruit and Retain Learners

Facilitated by Jo Gourley-Froome, Mentor Group

Overview:

1. How rich insight delivers marketing magic
Case studies from the world of brands to highlight the importance of understanding your consumer

2. The power of insight
What rich understanding can add to your marketing plan

3. Creating insight rich learner typologies
How to create a profile of your learners in order to market to them effectively and reduce attrition

4. Sources of learner insight
How to capture the information that makes the difference

Workshop 7: TSSP Community of Practice – Supporting Staff to Improve the Quality of Provision

Facilitated by Lorna Freakley, Magna Associates & Sue Blake, Strategic Development Network

Workshop 8: Resources for Staff and Employers Working with Vulnerable Learners
