Jean Kelly's interest in the professional development of leaders is based on more than 40 years' experience of teaching and management in schools, universities and in further education and skills. She has had extensive experience in running initial teacher education programmes and pro-fessional development opportunities and used her experience as a leader in professional devel-opment to design, develop and advise on national CPD programmes with the Learning and Skills Development Agency (LSDA) and the Centre for Excellence in Leadership (CEL). She was re-sponsible for the design of the first Subject Learning Coaches programme in 2004 and has ‘trained the trainers’ for this and other leadership programmes in all part of the FE and skills sector.

Jean worked with the Institute for Learning (IfL) from 2002, initially as a researcher and member of the transitional council, then as Director of Professional Development and latterly, until November 2014, as the Chief Executive. Her work to support members in their professional development and to remain in good professional standing has included conducting and publishing an annual review of IfL members’ CPD; producing guides to effective CPD for teachers, trainers and leaders; leading the editorial team for IfL’s professional journal, InTuition, and organising national CPD events and focus groups. She has also acted as an adviser on many national stakeholder groups including the independent Commission on Adult Vocational Teaching and Learning (CAVTL, 2013), the Educa-tion and Training Foundation revision of the Professional Standards and the Leadership Conversa-tion in 2014.

Jean retired in November 2014 when the IfL closed and has been pursuing her interest in research and the leadership of learning as an independent education and leadership consultant.
